What is a Twit? It’s not the same as a tweet although it’s sometimes referred to as one. Is it a person? Is it short for Twitter? Is it a tweet gone viral? Or a tweet gone bad. Or neither? Check out these 33 tips to not be a twit on Twitter.

Let’s quit bantering over the semantics & get real with people. Authenticity is a word being over used in social circles. Does it begin to lose meaning to some? Absolutely. However, just because we may be tired of the word “authenticity” does it change the importance and ability to embrace, desire and appreciate real relationships both online and offline? Absolutely not.

Many social savvy business leaders and marketers have integrated social media into their DNA. We know how to tweet with one hand, check into Foursquare in a split second & post a photo to Facebook without missing an run on the rugrats baseball field.
Regardless of where you are with social media, there is one fact you need to understand.
There is a conversation happening in your honor right now. The question is are you part of it?

So you got me to click the “like” button. I may have been excited, simply curious or half asleep when I clicked like. I may or may not virtually run to my Facebook wall to remove the automated Facebook post that tells the world I clicked LIKE on your page. If your lucky I will leave it there. I admit I delete at least 50% of them!
Will I ever visit your page again? What are you going to do to inspire me beyond the like? The even bigger question is do you care about me after I click “like”? Or are you in it just for the numbers?
Did you know that on average 95% of people who click “like” never visit the Facebook page again? Given these statistics you better give a hoot about me after the like. Otherwise it’s all for nothin’!

For the Chamber of Commerce organization it’s no longer “how am I going to afford to get online?” Instead their question should be “what am I NOT going to do so that I can afford to integrate social media into my business?” Local networking meetings are being replaced by Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn groups, MasterMinds filled with people you meet online, sales funnels, automated nurturing programs leveraging technologies such as Infusionsoft, Campaign Monitor & Constant Contact.
The issue is the majority of Chamber organizations aren’t doing these things themselves. If they don’t understand the technologies and art of using such how can they connect with their members and potential target future members online?

So you have a Facebook business page, a LinkedIn profile, a blog, and maybe even a professional photo taken for your custom twitter background. However, something about that crazy bird and all those 140 character yappin’ peeps freaks you out. You want to be part of the conversation yet you aren’t certain how to start or what to say!
To this point you have made the choice to sit on the sidelines. Though when you lay your head down on the pillow at night you can hear the little bird saying “come on, tweet with me, you can do it!”

Listen up folks! It’s time for conversations, relationships, Twitter chats, and Facebook parties. Social media is one big relationship! You must tweet, post, like and talk all day. As long as you’re talkin’ you’re being social. Since you’re so social, you’ll do great in social media as long as you keep making friends, chattin’ and [...]

When it comes to experiential brand and marketing, you either get it or you don’t. If you think all it takes is a pretty logo, Twitter background, branded Facebook page and matching business card is going to provide your audience a true brand experience, then sorry, you don’t ”get it.” Apple has the brand experience nailed. [...]

It’s time for the next social media and marketing event. You pack your bag, charge your iphone or Android, grab the iPad, and your new business cards with the QRC code on the back.
You’re off, you’re ready and before you get to the airport your twitter followers know where you are going, what the hashtag is and what you’re excited to see and do when you get there. You tweet your fellow attendees to plan your first face to face get together. You’ve already planned the first tweetup that by the way use to be called “Happy Hour”.

Getting out into world, learning from new perspectives, enjoying the company of others is the spice of life.
So why in business do we find this so hard to accept? Why do we think we’ll accomplish more if we stay inside our corporate and virtual home offices as we fervently turn in our social hamster wheels of marketing strategies, business plans, engagement approaches, audience research, websites, Facebook pages and suites that hoot?
Yes, the economy stinks. However, that doesn’t mean we need to work the hamster wheel 24/7. It actually should drive the opposite behavior.

So you say you know your audience? You think you know what they need and want. You spend hours each week working on blog content, posts for Facebook, tweets and more. Yet, your efforts don’t seem to be providing a return. Your blog readership isn’t increasing. The number of fans on your Facebook business page increases yet it’s like a desert with nobody talking to one another. You post a question and nobody answers except your best friend.
What could possibly be the problem? You’ve learned the tools. You’ve taken the classes. You know a conversation is of most importance in social media. However, nobody seems to want to talk to you.

Social media is free, right? Simply register for 50 social media profile accounts, start tweeting, facebooking and linking and you’ll have tons of free leads, referrals and an instant community, right? WRONG! There is no short cut to social media. Why you ask? It’s easy, to setup profiles, easy to get new friends, easy to [...]

To tweet or not to tweet was your question of 2010. Now that it’s 201 you’ve decided to take the big tweet plunge. You finally get the guts to hop on Twitter. Chances are your experience might have started out a little like this:
1. You setup your account.
2. You followed some famous people that Twitter suggested you follow. As you did this you thought… “hmmm… just what I thought… Twitter is a waste of time… why do I need to follow Justin Bieber?”

If you had to pick one, what would it be? A Facebook “like” or an email address? When building a community and connecting with your audience, would you rather have 1000 fans on your Facebook page or 1000 qualified names?
Although the answer on the surface seems quite simple, the truth is it’s not so simple.

We all know the type. The business, the newspaper, the consultant, the franchise owner, the MLM team lead, the cheesey online city portal who refuses to admit social media success requires engagement. They’re afraid of getting negative comments on a blog so they don’t blog. They think their current ways are working even though their [...]

Most of us know that social media is about 1:1 connection. At the core of the social ecosystems are people and relationships. Connecting with your audience, partners, influencers and yes, customers with more than just an avatar is essential.
It’s easy to get caught up in the science of social media, the Klout scores, number of followers, retweets and other metrics and forget why you’re doing social media in the first place. Yes, the metrics and ROI are of great importance. However, it’s important to not forget that there are people behind the tools, widgets, gadgets and avatars.

Today I kicked off my day with an awesome coaching client. He is a financial exec for a large corporation. We are working with him to build a business platform to enable him to at one point break free from the chains of corporate America. We are helping him build a strategy for social media, develop a brand architecture and a business platform for which to build a community that he can share his knowledge and help others.
