15 Social Media Lies, Myths & Fairy Tales

social media myths, lies and fairy tales

If you are an experienced social marketer you know the realities of social media. You know what it takes to achieve results. You know there is no quick fix or magic pill to results. You know that buying Facebook fans, Facebook likes, clicks, or Twitter followers is not going to help you meet business goals.

What about you new kids on the block? I work with many of you so I know how you feel and what is keeping you up at night. I know the questions you ask. I know the lies you are being told or the assumptions you are making that are far from truthful.

The purpose of this post is to highlight some of these myths, lies and false hopes that may be keeping you from results. This post is not meant for those who can write a book on each topic. It is targeted to the newbies to social media, the business leaders who may know how to rock traditional marketing and other mediums but are struggling with integrating social media into business.

Is Your Content Worthy of a Like, Share, Pin, Retweet, Google +1?

content marketing share worthy

How many hours have you spent adding buttons, gadgets and widgets to your new blog or website? You research the right tools, share buttons, share bars, analytic tracking tools and more. You install them with a hope and a prayer that someone somewhere is going to use them. However, unfortunately many business leaders find they don’t get used. The share buttons sit on their site with the lonely zero or default +1. Chances are your pocket book or wallet might be feeling a little lonely too.

social media addiction balance life work

42 Things to do on Twitter besides Tweet Spam & Coupons

what to tweet on twitter

One of the number one social media questions I hear from business leaders is “what should I tweet?”

It’s funny because most business owners start a business because they have a passion for something or at minimum have an interest in it enough they believe they can make some money providing such a service or product. However, when it comes to sending a 140 character tweet they struggle with it.

150 Over Used, Conflicting but Sometimes Still Useful Social Media Tips

social media less talk more action

Tweet this way. No actually tweet that way. Don’t talk to much. Talk or you are not engaging. Treat me like a human being. Don’t ignore me. Share your best stuff. Invite me to your Facebook page. Don’t spam me. Don’t tell me what you ate for lunch.

My oh my… no wonder the newbies get confused. As I read more and more blog posts recently it is becoming apparent how many conflicting words of advice are being given by everyone blogging, tweeting, Facebooking, and Google plussing. We could spend days just sorting thru what the actual truth is and what will help our business.

Walgreens Case Study – Humanizing Social Business

humanizing social business

When was the last time a big national brand made you feel special via the social waves? Are we starting to lose the hope we once had in social media of humanizing brands? The possibility of them actually demonstrating their brand promise via social media versus just plaster the words on their Facebook page?

Are some brands falling prey to traditional mass marketing methods that are simply masked with a coat of new paint in red and marked with a K+ and called social media? Are some fooling themselves into thinking they are engaging by leveraging only automated tweets, retweets, and direct messages?

I didn’t realize when I started this series that I would end up writing the book I always wanted to write with this title. I do think this will end up being a never ending blog series. My only fear is that I may not remember how to count as I high as I may need to in Roman numerals. Oh my, what would my elementary school teacher think?

In Part II we discussed the importance of focusing on the people when planning and setting priorities for social media.

In this post (Part III) I am going to cover (okay, rant) about why you must do more than realize it’s about the people. We are going to discuss why you must get in the head of the people. You must understand them!
