Welcome to the inspiration age, where connecting with your audience and communities is not an option, but a requirement for business and life.

However, times are changing drastically. Now it's practically a free for all. We are all the media. The world is noisy on and offline. It is more difficult than ever to stand out from the crowd, to rise above the noise and to earn trust and connect with hearts. We can communicate anyway we want. We can communicate how, when and where we want… and so can our audience.

You do not own your audience. You do not own your social media communities on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat even if they are following you, like you or snap with you.

Your audience is not there to serve you. You are there to serve your audience, period!

You must engage. You must be a contributing, healthy part of the conversation. You must be able to serve up consistent, unique and relevant value. You must earn trust and continually nurture their spirit, heart and bank account.

You must learn how to serve the data, knowledge and inspiration your audience and communities yearn for.

    Hi Pam,

    Such a relevant and needed message for marketers, business owners and entrepreneurs. I’ve been engaging with many entrepreneurs offline who just don’t get this message.

    I really think this is the consequence of the mass marketing mindset that has permeated our culture for hundreds of years but was accelerated thanks to radio, TV and in the early 2000’s with the web.

    It’s a talk to everyone mentality and now that mass marketing doesn’t work on the web many businesses are sour on the promises of blogging, social media and digital marketing. They fell for the belief that just being on the internet was good enough because that’s where everyone is at.

    It’s simply not true in this transition of the digital age. It’s more critical than ever that businesses learn what business they are “really” in from the perspective of the consumer. We have to learn:

    1. The tangible values they experience through or businesses / products or services and how they feel about those experiences.
    2. The specific problems each tangible value solves.
    3. Who the “specific” people we are solving the problems for.
    4. How our products / services are “a” part of “a” solution

    Then communicate it to them in a way that is about them independently of us. We have moved into an age where the consumer doesn’t care about us or how wonderful we tell them we are… It’s about relating, identifying and demonstrating that we are competent to meet their needs or desires or to solve their problems.

    I so appreciate your contribution to these ideas and I hope you will persuade many of the needed shifts in mindset so that businesses can be effective in the digital age!!!!
